September Program – Bluebirding in Montana

September 10, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Bluebirding in Montana
Courting Western Bluebirds by Jane Brockway

Have you ever driven along a rural road in Montana and wondered about all those bird houses on the posts? The original Mountain Bluebird Trail, located on Sloan Road outside of Ronan, MT, is still maintained and bluebird research there continues. From this trail, there are countless more through Montana and southern Idaho. Jane Brockway will discuss the bluebird conservation movement on the state and national level.  She will present a powerpoint and slide show of Mountain and Western bluebirds and will relate the adventures of being a trail monitor. A short video “Inside the Nest Box” will also be shown. Come and learn about Bluebirding in Western Montana!

Jane Brockway started ‘bluebirding’ in about 1998 with a few boxes at the family ranch in western Montana. Her trail now totals about 80 boxes. Her camera lives on her table and she is able to watch and photograph bluebirds most of the year. Jane was trained to band birds in 2004 and currently bands 200-350 bluebirds per year.  She holds a Master Banding Permit for Mountain Bluebird Trails (MBT) and has been editor of the Mountain Bluebird Trails newsletter for the past 10 years. She has served on the Board of Directors of MBT for many years and also serves on the Board of Directors for NABS: The North American Bluebird Society.
